Environment Secretary met with water providers to discuss strategies to protect water supply amid the driest summer in 50 years

This morning, the Environment Secretary and Environment Minister Steve Double met with water company CEOs to discuss the ongoing response to the extended dry weather.

Ministers were informed by chief executive officers of how their companies are safeguarding public water supplies and mitigating the consequences of an extremely dry time.

Secretary of the Environment George Eustice stated:

“Today I met the chief executives of water companies to discuss the measures they are taking to protect water supplies in what is the driest summer in over 50 years.

“All water companies have reassured me that water supplies remain resilient across the country. Each company has a pre-agreed drought plan which they are following, and I have urged them to take any precautionary steps needed to protect essential supplies as we go into a likely very dry autumn.

“We are better prepared than ever before for periods of dry weather with a system that is working well to manage water usage, protect the environment and maintain water supplies for the public and critical sectors. We will continue to actively monitor the situation, working alongside partners including the Environment Agency.”

Despite the fact that all water providers have told us that vital supplies are still secure, it is their responsibility to preserve these supplies.

The Secretary of the Environment has said that, in line with their pre-agreed drought strategies, water providers throughout the nation have taken appropriate measures to alleviate the consequences of this protracted dry spell utilising a variety of available resources.

Each company has a locally-tailored drought strategy, and we encourage them to apply it properly in order to protect public water resources. Eight water providers have implemented their required drought plans, while others have said that they are executing the actions outlined in their plans.

Individuals play a vital part in sustainably managing their consumption, but we want water providers to limit leakage and replace leaky pipes as rapidly as possible, as well as take broader action in tandem with government policy.
