Emma Coronel Aispuro, Wife of El Chapo, Released from US Custody
Emma Coronel Aispuro, the wife of Mexican crime lord El Chapo, has been released from US custody after serving less than two years in prison. The release occurred at a halfway house within the Long Beach Residential Reentry Management on Wednesday afternoon.
Shortened Sentence
Aispuro had been sentenced to three years in prison in November 2021 for her involvement in her husband’s multi-billion-dollar drug empire. Her release comes after serving a relatively short portion of her sentence.
Federal Bureau of Prisons Statement
The Federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed her release, stating, “We can confirm Emma Coronel Aispuro was released from the custody of the FBOP today, September 13, 2023.” However, they refrained from providing additional information on her release for privacy, safety, and security reasons.
Guilty Plea and Drug Charges
As a dual US-Mexican citizen, Aispuro had pleaded guilty to multiple federal drug charges. These charges included conspiracy to distribute heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine, and marijuana. During her sentencing, she had reportedly pleaded for forgiveness.
Forfeiture Money Judgment
In addition to her prison sentence, a judge in the case entered a forfeiture money judgment of nearly $1.5 million, representing proceeds from illicit drug deals.
Arrest and Escape Involvement
Aispuro was arrested in February 2021 at Dulles International Airport. Her arrest was linked to her involvement in helping her husband, Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán, escape from a high-security Mexican prison in 2015. Guzmán, the former head of Mexico’s Sinaloa cartel, was eventually captured and returned to prison. His wife had also plotted his escape in 2017.
El Chapo’s Conviction
Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán was convicted in the US on charges related to his involvement in a continual criminal enterprise and the distribution of large quantities of cocaine. He is currently serving a life sentence in prison, along with an additional 30 years for the charges.
Transfer and Release
Aispuro was transferred from a federal prison in Texas to a halfway house in Long Beach, California, in June, in anticipation of her eventual release.
