Egg prices to fall 30% if US does not see rebound in outbreaks of bird flu – USDA

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) said on Thursday that egg prices, which have remained near record highs for months, will experience a sharp decline this year if there is no resurgence of bird flu.

The anticipated price drop will be welcomed by consumers, who have seen egg prices rise considerably over the past few months. In January, the cost of a dozen eggs was $4.80, an increase of 150% from the previous year.

USDA Chief Economist Seth Meyer stated at the USDA Agricultural Outlook Forum in Virginia on Thursday that wholesale egg prices will drop by 26.8% in 2023.

The high egg prices have been attributed by the agency to the historic outbreaks of avian flu, which have killed over 58 million backyard and commercial chickens and turkeys since February 2022.

USDA predicts that egg production will rise by 4% this year to 9.4 billion dozen, and the number of egg-laying chickens will recover. USDA expects a full recovery in the laying flock, but the projection is dependent on there being no continued avian flu outbreaks.
