Dresden police say the hostage issue has been resolved

German police say they have concluded a hostage situation in Dresden’s eastern city, following reports of gunfire early Saturday.

Authorities had encouraged people to avoid an area in the city center and ordered Dresden’s Christmas market to remain closed while the operation was underway.

The police tweeted just after noon that the hostage crisis had ended.

“Two apparently unharmed individuals are in our care,” they continued. It was unclear whether the culprit had been arrested immediately.

A shooter reportedly attempted to enter a building housing Radio Dresden near the city’s major train station, according to Radio Dresden. According to Radio Dresden, the man allegedly fired multiple shots before fleeing.

Saturday, a 62-year-old lady was discovered dead in a different section of Dresden, according to a separate report from the police. Her forty-year-old son has been identified as a suspect. The police refused to acknowledge if there was a link between the murder and the hostage situation.
