Disney Revives Abandoned £900 Million Cruise Ship

Disney has given a new lease of life to the Global Dream, a £900 million cruise ship, which had been abandoned before its maiden voyage.

The vessel had been sitting inside a German shipyard alongside its sister ship, the Global Dream II, for the last 12 months.

While the latter was being dismantled for its fixtures and engines, the Global Dream was still up for sale.

With more passenger accommodations than any other cruise ship, it was built by MV Wefrten and owned by Genting Hong Kong, which filed for bankruptcy at the beginning of 2021.

Eventually, Disney purchased the ship for just £40 million, a heavily discounted price.

New Name and Look

This week, Disney unveiled the new name and look of the ship, which has been christened the Disney Treasure.

The sides and bow of the ship will have a new livery painted across them.

A tweet posted by Disney Parks announced that the ship is to be headed by Captain Minnie Mouse, who will journey to faraway lands in a new @DisneyCruise Line adventure.

The video shows Minnie searching for treasure before showcasing the new-look ship. Bookings for the ship are set to launch next year, with the first voyage happening soon after.

Green Methanol

Disney has decided to change the ship’s engines to use methanol for fuel.

This will make it one of the first in the cruise industry to be ‘fuelled by green methanol’ instead of diesel.

This eco-friendly step is in line with Disney’s commitment to the environment.
