Disabled villagers need kerb

Villagers in Graig Y Fedw are experiencing a loss of independence because they are unable to safely get on and off the kerbs.

This has prompted residents to call for a dropped kerb to be installed in the village, making it easier for disabled people to move around.

Robert Morgan, a villager diagnosed with hereditary neuropathy with pressure palsies (HNPP), requested a dropped kerb from the council two years ago.

However, the road bosses claimed that they were unable to install one due to “engineering problems.” Mr Morgan’s condition has affected his mobility, and he now relies on a mobility scooter.

He is unable to understand why the council cannot construct a dropped kerb or find an alternative that is accessible to disabled individuals.

Councillor John Roberts, who represents the Aber Valley, was informed that the retaining wall of the property near the kerb would be affected if the kerb was lowered.

The kerb was then rebuilt, which Mr Morgan describes as a “waste of money.” Mr Morgan’s mental health has deteriorated since his diagnosis, and he suffers from anxiety, depression, and panic attacks.

Jackie Cartwright, whose 79-year-old father is disabled and lives in the area, believes that the council does not care.

She stated that her father is unable to go into the village with her mother because it is difficult for him to be independent.

The council spokesperson claimed that the location was unsuitable for a pedestrian crossing due to engineering problems.

However, the officers are working with the local councillor to discuss alternative options to help facilitate pedestrian movements in the area.

In conclusion, residents of Graig Y Fedw are calling for a dropped kerb to be installed to make the village accessible to disabled individuals.

The council claimed that the location was unsuitable for a pedestrian crossing, but they are working with the local councillor to find alternative solutions.
