Top 20 Confusing Tech Terms
Among the most bewildering digital terms for older adults are “processor,” “malware,” and “USB-C.” The list also includes “cookies,” “IP addresses,” and “smishing,” reflecting the complexity of modern technology.
Digital Dictionary to the Rescue
In collaboration with AbilityNet and lexicographer Susie Dent, BT Group has introduced the Digital Dictionary.
This resource aims to simplify the 21 most commonly misunderstood words used on the internet, empowering older individuals to navigate the online world with confidence.
The Struggles of Older Generations Online
The study reveals that individuals over 65 spend an average of just five and a half hours per week online, with 78 percent feeling left behind due to their limited digital knowledge.
Over half (54 percent) wish they were more tech-savvy, but motivation remains a barrier for 17 percent.
Navigating the Maze: Challenges and Frustrations
Older adults encounter various challenges, including the feeling of information overload and the need for guidance.
However, 16 percent fear being seen as burdensome if they seek assistance with technology.
Frustration, along with feelings of silliness or stupidity, prevails among those grappling with online jargon.
The Digital World: A Mix of Positives and Negatives
While the online world offers easy access to information, convenience, and connectivity with friends and family, it also poses concerns.
Scams (34 percent) and privacy issues (14 percent) top the list of dislikes about being online.
Additionally, 10 percent express skepticism about the credibility of online information.
