In response to the recent allocation of N70 billion for the National Assembly, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has clarified that the funds are intended for the infrastructure of the parliament and not for the personal benefit of lawmakers.
The approval for this allocation was made during a plenary session on Thursday, following the amendment of the N819.5 billion 2022 Supplementary budget.
Addressing Backlash and Misconceptions
Amidst the backlash surrounding the allocation, Benjamin Kalu addressed the issue in a conversation with reporters.
He emphasized that the purpose of the allocated funds is not for palliative measures or to cater to the needs of National Assembly members.
Instead, the funds are specifically designated for improving the infrastructure of the National Assembly.
Infrastructure Enhancement and Support for Nigerians
Kalu further explained that the focus of the allocation is to enhance the National Assembly’s infrastructure, specifically mentioning the component related to the parliament.
He clarified that the major portion of the bill passed aims to assist Nigerians who are currently experiencing the impact of the removal of subsidy, emphasizing that the funds are intended to provide support to those affected by this policy change.
