Delivery man rescues trapped people in flooded vehicle

When a sheriff’s officer arrived at the scene of a report, he saw a delivery driver in the water saving individuals trapped inside an overturned automobile in a canal.

The automobile overturned and went half immersed in a Florida canal on October 8, trapping an elderly couple and their caregiver inside.

The moment a sheriff’s officer arrives at the scene is captured on body camera footage provided by the Indian County Sheriff’s department.

Deputy Dan Whittington was attending to another incident when he passed the flipping vehicle and into the canal to help an Amazon driver who was yanking a lady in scrubs from the back of the vehicle.

After the rescue, two ladies from the automobile were transferred to a local hospital, although they just needed minor injuries treated.

The elderly couple, who were traveling with a caregiver, were reportedly east of the Indian River Mall, close to Vero Beach, when their automobile crashed and wound up in a canal.

Deputy Patrick Newman showed up later to help with the rescue.

As the astonished lady is being removed from the vehicle, deputy Newman can be heard assuring her, “We have you, we got you.”

Whittington admitted to being rather astonished when he saw the automobile turned upside down to local television station WPTV.

Whittington stated, “I believe I was placed there for a purpose and just at the perfect moment, and I’m delighted we were able to get all three of them out of the vehicle.”

Whittington said of an elderly guy in the car: “If we hadn’t gotten there, he would’ve surely drowned because he was ready to give up.”

“I’m glad I was [there to assist], but do I see myself as a hero?” No, I don’t think I’m a hero, the deputy said.

Indian River County Fire Rescue assisted in the rescue but has not yet been able to identify the Amazon driver.
