David Gillespie is set to return to EastEnders to reprise his role as Duncan Boyd after more than 30 years since he first appeared in Albert Square.

The actor played the curate of the local church and became involved with one of the show’s much-loved characters, Sharon Watts, when he first appeared in the BBC soap opera in 1987.

As Sharon sought comfort at his church to escape her turbulent home life, they became engaged until Sharon called off the marriage when Duncan was offered a new job in Wiltshire.

He is set to return for a short stint to officiate Albie’s christening later this month, but he will be shocked to learn that Sharon is the young boy’s mother.

Past Romantic History to Resurface

The broadcaster has said that although Duncan’s time in Walford is short-lived, his arrival is sure to cause some drama, as his past romantic history with Sharon comes to light.

Gillespie commented that it was a pleasure to be back in EastEnders, reviving his role as Duncan, after over 30 years of leaving the show.

He admitted that it was strange at first but “nice strange” and that he was made to feel instantly at home by the wonderful cast and great crew.

Chris Clenshaw, the show’s executive producer, said that it’s wonderful to welcome David back to the role of Duncan Boyd and that they’re delighted to have him back for a short while as he unknowingly stirs up drama between the happy couple.

Commentary

EastEnders is one of the most popular and long-running soap operas in the UK, and viewers often develop strong attachments to its characters.

Gillespie’s return as Duncan Boyd after more than three decades will no doubt generate a lot of excitement among fans of the show.

The reunion of Duncan and Sharon, even if it’s only for a short while, is likely to bring back many nostalgic memories for those who followed their romantic storyline in the late 1980s.

The return of former characters is a regular occurrence in soap operas, and it’s always interesting to see how they fit back into the current storyline and interact with the current cast.
