The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has issued a warning to President Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government regarding potential military action in Niger Republic aimed at restoring ousted President Mohamed Bazoum to power.
On July 25, General Abdourahamane Tchiani-led Presidential Guard detained and took control of the government from Bazoum, prompting the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to impose sanctions on Niger Republic and consider military intervention.
CUPP Opposes Military Intervention
In response to the proposed military invasion, the co-National Spokesperson of CUPP, Mark Adebayo, expressed strong opposition, deeming the move unnecessary and thoughtless.
CUPP highlighted that Nigeria’s military has been extensively engaged in combating terrorism and insurgency, which has strained the country’s resources.
Therefore, the coalition argued that a costly military intervention in Niger Republic is beyond Nigeria’s means and could prove unsuccessful, given the coup’s popularity among the majority of Nigeriens.
The Case for Diplomacy
CUPP stressed the need for diplomatic efforts within the West African subregion to resolve the situation in Niger Republic rather than resorting to military action.
They urged President Bola Tinubu and other West African countries to deploy their diplomatic assets, possibly with international collaboration, to find a peaceful solution that respects Nigeriens’ wishes and avoids bloodshed.
The coalition emphasized that forcing a solution upon another country against its will is not advisable, and Niger should be allowed to determine its own present and future.
Prioritizing Nigeria’s Challenges
CUPP further urged Nigeria to focus on addressing its internal security challenges and economic hardships instead of engaging in military interventions.
The coalition underscored the importance of concentrating resources on healing the country and alleviating the suffering of its people, especially in the face of a fragile economy.
In conclusion, CUPP strongly advocated for diplomacy as the preferred approach to resolving the political crisis in Niger Republic, asserting that military intervention would be impractical, unaffordable, and counterproductive to the stability of the region.
