Fuel Price Hike and Negative Impact on Nigerians
The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has strongly criticized President Bola Tinubu’s administration following the recent increase in the pump price of petrol or fuel.
The price of petrol rose from N540 to N617 per litre, as announced by the federal government through the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited.
Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC, attributed the increase to market forces after a meeting with Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Aso Villa.
However, CUPP expressed its concerns about the hardship faced by Nigerians due to the continuous fuel price hikes, stating that the removal of fuel subsidy by President Tinubu’s government seems like a scam to the citizens.
In a press release signed by the group’s national co-spokesperson, Mark Adebayo, CUPP criticized the frequent and steep fuel price hikes that are driving inflation and making life unbearable for Nigerians.
They expressed dissatisfaction with the sudden increase, which came barely a month after the fuel price was hiked over 300% on May 29th this year.
According to CUPP, the recent pump price increase by NNPC is having a negative domino effect on all other commodities and services in the country, plunging Nigerians into poverty and economic hardships.
They questioned the purpose of removing fuel subsidies without robust intervention to protect the citizens, calling it an antisocial and iniquitous policy.
CUPP urged President Tinubu to ensure that NNPC is not controlled by forces seeking to continue claiming the subsidy through other means, while Nigerians bear the brunt of the economic consequences.
CUPP demanded the immediate removal of Mele Kyari as the GMD of NNPC, calling for a thorough investigation into his tenure and prosecution of any discovered infractions related to the fuel subsidy.
They urged the federal government to take immediate action to reverse the recent fuel price hikes and prevent any future clandestine increases that would further burden Nigerians.
The press release concluded with CUPP questioning when Nigerians would be free from the suffering caused by their governments, emphasizing the need for a compassionate and responsive leadership to alleviate the economic challenges faced by the common man.
