Julie Goodyear MBE, renowned for her portrayal of the beloved character Bet Lynch on Coronation Street, has been diagnosed with dementia, as confirmed by her husband, Scott Brand.
In a statement, Brand expressed the heartbreak they have both endured upon receiving the diagnosis.
Goodyear has been experiencing forgetfulness for some time, prompting them to seek medical advice and assistance.
Unfortunately, they have learned that the condition is irreversible and will progressively worsen, possibly at an accelerated rate.
Despite the difficult news, Goodyear’s husband has decided to publicly announce the diagnosis, as she still enjoys socializing with friends and dining out.
Being recognized by fans brings her joy, and she cherishes these interactions.
However, fatigue can sometimes lead to confusion. Brand hopes for understanding from the public regarding any changes they may notice.
Goodyear, 81, is a patron of Willow Wood Hospice in Greater Manchester and will continue in that role.
She also founded a charity that led to the establishment of the Julie Goodyear Cancer Screening Centre following her own battle with and recovery from cervical cancer in 1979.
The iconic soap actress first appeared on Coronation Street as Bet Lynch in 1966, initially for a short stint before pursuing a theater career.
However, she returned to the show in 1970 and remained a beloved character and landlady of the Rovers Return for the next 25 years.
Although she left the show in 1995, shortly after receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award at the inaugural National Television Awards, she made occasional appearances in subsequent years.
In recognition of her contributions to television drama, Goodyear was awarded an MBE in 1996.
