Controversy erupted as council officials ordered the removal of a beloved Union flag mural adorning the award-winning fish and chip shop, Golden Chippy, situated in Greenwich, south-east London.
Owner Chris Kanizi, 65, has been instructed to paint over the mural, deemed ‘inappropriate for the area’ by local authorities.
The mural, depicting a humanoid fish and featuring the phrase ‘A Great British Meal,’ has garnered admiration from tourists but has drawn complaints prompting the council’s intervention.
Mr. Kanizi, who has operated Golden Chippy for two decades, contests the council’s claims, expressing disbelief that the mural is the subject of objection.
This is not the first time Mr. Kanizi has clashed with the council over signage.
In 2016, he engaged in a two-year battle over a 17ft sign above the restaurant’s door, eventually relenting in 2018 despite significant public support.
Undeterred, Mr. Kanizi is adamant about retaining the £250 mural, vowing to keep it up for as long as possible, citing its popularity among international patrons who frequently photograph themselves with the artwork.
In response to the situation, a spokesman for Greenwich council clarified that the mural constitutes an ‘unauthorized advert’ and stated that the owner has agreed to paint over it.
However, the council affirmed its commitment to explore negotiation with the owner before resorting to formal planning enforcement measures.
The clash between Golden Chippy and Greenwich council underscores the tension between preserving the historic character of an area and embracing vibrant expressions of cultural identity.
Mr. Kanizi’s determination to maintain the mural reflects the significance of public art in fostering community spirit and identity.
It remains to be seen whether a compromise can be reached between the parties involved, balancing regulatory compliance with community sentiment.
