Sheffield eatery returns to 1972 prices with 45p chippy


In the midst of a cost-of-living crisis that might cause chip shops to raise prices to as high as £20, hundreds of consumers lined up to take advantage of a one-time chance to enjoy a dish of fish and chips for only 45p.

Around 400 people lined up on London Road, one of Sheffield’s busiest streets, when Mother Hubbard’s in Sheffield, south Yorkshire, opened at 11 a.m. today to grab the much sought-after deal.

The new business’s proprietors opted to go back in time to reflect those pricing, offering a traditional fish and chips meal for only 45p. The chip shop franchise initially opened in Bradford in 1972.

The store wants to return to its beginnings by giving its first 1,000 clients a taste of 1972 by using décor from that era.

There will be fish and chips for everyone, the head chef Chris Farnell assured the Sheffield Star.

“It’s nice to be able to provide something like this to folks,” one person said, “because of lockdown and everything else people are having to confront financially right now.”

The new eatery can accommodate 60 patrons at once and provides a takeout option.

It has 40 ready potato bags, each weighing 25kg, to meet demand in case there are lengthy lines on opening day.

Pies, pastries, poultry dishes, sausages, and meal packages will also be available at the store.

According to the website, a typical piece of fish and chips costs £8.75.

Half an hour before the store’s initial opening to famished customers, the line started at 10.30am.

The first person in line was Sheffield native Tom Watson, 25. He described it as “incredible,” particularly given the current expense of living.

Following the mini-budget announcement yesterday, chip shops have already warned that the price of a dish of fish and chips might soon jump over £20.

In addition to fixing corporate tax at 19% and limiting the basic rate of income tax to the same low percentage, Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng proposed a number of other tax-cutting initiatives.

He worries that costs might reach £16 per piece by January.

Standard fish and chips are already often priced in the city at £15; thus, a 50% price hike could see Londoners paying more than £20 in a couple of months.

The cost of the beloved British favourite has increased at an unprecedented rate due to a mix of rising expenses and rising costs for basic materials like fish, potatoes, and oil.

The National Federation of Fish Friers’ president, Andrew Crook, criticised the government today for supporting “bankers, not bakers and financiers, not fish friers,” in a statement.

In light of today’s pronouncements, which included a promise to abolish limitations on local incentives, he said that the budget had “totally missed the target.”

Because our work is more than just a job for us, it’s a way of life, Mr. Cook noted that this was a chance to relieve some of the strain on small businesses.

But this budget absolutely misses the goal, they say.

In addition, when prices grow, fewer people will want to dine out, which would hurt the hospitality industry. Steaks might eventually cost £100 and curries £30.

Due to growing energy prices, pubs and restaurants around the UK are being forced to shut.
