Contribute ideas for a new park on Capitol Hill

The community is invited by Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR) to assess the design concept and suggested features for a new park on Capitol Hill, which will be situated at 1125 Harvard Ave E. Please join us on Saturday, October 15, 2022, beginning at 10 a.m. in Volunteer Park, 1400 East Prospect St., Seattle, 98112. The community is invited to learn about the project, provide feedback on design possibilities, and learn about the next steps.

Thank you to everyone who has taken part thus far. We have combined your suggestions from the online survey and the Open House/Meet-and-Greet into a design concept and proposed components for the future park, in collaboration with our design team from Karen Kiest Landscape Architects.

The 1.6-acre parcel was kindly donated to the City of Seattle in 1972 by Stimson and Kay Bullitt for a future park. SPR would want to emphasize that this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for both the agency and the community. As we proceed with bringing this land into SPR’s inventory, we know that there are important things to consider in transferring this site from a private yard and garden to public ownership. We value your feedback on the survey and encourage you to join us as we undertake a comprehensive public engagement process and discourse about the park’s future design and aim.

Karen Kiest Landscape Architecture has been contracted by SPR to oversee the community involvement, visioning, and design process for the new park. The initial step of this project entails collaborating with the community to create concept level/early design designs for the public park.

Final product of this initial phase will include:

  • Establishing a vision for the park
  • Concept/early schematic design for the park
  • Rough order of magnitude cost estimate for possible inclusion in the next round of the Seattle Park District funding
