The poll, conducted at the beginning of July, revealed that only 23% of respondents believe the Tories can effectively govern, while a significant 57% expressed their doubts.

Concerns Ahead of By-Elections:

These figures present a challenging outlook for Conservative leaders, particularly in light of the upcoming three by-elections scheduled for July 20.

Chancellor Jeremy Hunt’s previous warning about the importance of a reputation for economic competence to secure re-election further highlights the gravity of the situation.

Mixed Reception of Individual Policies:

The Ipsos poll also discovered that 43% of respondents hold a negative view of the Conservatives’ individual policies, nearly double the number of those who expressed liking them.

Additionally, favorability ratings for the party continue to decline, with 54% of respondents indicating an unfavorable view, compared to only 22% who have a favorable opinion.

Public Perception and Direction of the Country:

Moreover, the proportion of individuals believing the country is heading in the wrong direction increased to 63% from 60% at the end of May.

Gideon Skinner, head of political research at Ipsos, highlighted the negative public perceptions towards the Conservatives, their policies, and their competency in managing the country.

Mixed Views on Labour:

Although the survey revealed challenges for the Conservative Party, it also indicated a mixed reception for the Labour Party.

The public appears divided on whether they like Labour’s policies, with 27% expressing support, 28% expressing opposition, and 25% admitting to having limited knowledge about Labour’s policies.

When it comes to competence, 35% believe Labour could effectively govern, surpassing the Conservative total, but 45% have doubts about the party’s competence.

Favorability and Brexit Impact:

Labour’s favorability scores saw a slight increase over the past month, reaching parity, with 36% expressing a favorable opinion and 36% expressing an unfavorable view.

The Ipsos poll also highlighted that 57% of respondents believe Brexit has had a negative impact on the UK, marking the highest level since January 2020 when the question was first asked.

Conclusion:

The Ipsos survey presents a challenging scenario for the Conservative Party, with a majority of the British public expressing doubts about their competence in running the country.

Labour, while facing some skepticism as well, emerges with a more positive perception regarding policies and competence.

These findings underscore the need for the Conservatives to address public perceptions and rebuild their reputation for competence, particularly among their 2019 voters.
