Closed school after staff death

A secondary school in Basildon has closed following the unexpected death of a long-serving staff member, who reportedly collapsed and died of a suspected heart attack on the playground.

Steve Hutchinson is believed to have suffered the heart attack shortly before the start of the school day, and students did not witness the incident.

De La Salle’s headteacher, Paul Norris, has expressed his condolences to Mr Hutchinson’s family and praised the school staff for their swift actions in calling emergency services.

In a statement to parents, Mr Norris described Mr Hutchinson as a ‘well-liked and respected’ member of staff and outlined that the school would remain closed for most pupils on Tuesday 7th March, but would reopen as normal on Wednesday 8th March.

Remote learning has been provided for all pupils during the school’s closure, and arrangements have been put in place to support vulnerable students in understanding the tragic event.
