CIA Director William Burns stated in a CBS interview that the US is confident that China is considering providing lethal weapons to Russia in its ongoing war with Ukraine.
However, Burns emphasized that there is no evidence of China having shipped arms to Russia yet. Secretary of State Antony Blinken had also previously mentioned the possibility of China providing military aid.
Burns added that neither a final decision has been made nor is there any evidence of any actual shipments of lethal equipment. Burns stated that the US has made it clear that China would face serious consequences for providing lethal aid to Russia.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that if China were to ally itself with Russia, there would be a world war. Burns, in response to the administration’s threat to release intelligence showing China is weighing military assistance to Russia, stated that a decision by Chinese President Xi Jinping to move ahead with the shipments would be a very risky and unwise bet. He added that the Chinese are also trying to weigh the consequences of providing lethal equipment.
Burns further stated that Xi has been aware of the unity the West has shown during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. He said that Xi has watched Vladimir Putin’s experience in Ukraine more carefully than any other foreign leader and has been unsettled and sobered by what he’s seen.
