A block of apartments in China became a huge refrigerator after a tenant allegedly neglected to close the door during the week that the region had its lowest temperature ever.

On January 24, inhabitants of Jiamusi city, Heilongjiang province were seen on camera gazing in disbelief at the’snow cave’ that had formed near the building’s corridor entrance.

After harsh gusts drove snow through the doorway and coated the interior of the corridor, enormous sheets of ice hung from the doorframe and ceiling.

As they braved temperatures of -40 degrees Celsius, neighbors could be heard expressing awe at the phenomenon.

Last week, China’s national meteorological service warned citizens to bundle up as frigid temperatures threatened vulnerable inhabitants in the country’s central, northern, and eastern regions.

The frigid weather swept over a number of regions where locals are generally accustomed to relatively milder circumstances.

However, the northern Chinese town of Mohe, also known as “China’s North Pole,” reported three consecutive days of temperatures below -50C, which Chinese news reports deemed unusual.
