Charles Dickens is the early favorite in Hollywoodbets’ Durban July betting

Charles Dickens is the early favorite in the ante-post market for the 127th iteration of the Hollywoodbets Durban July on July 1, 2023.

According to the Sporting Post’s website, the 2 200-meter race is the holy grail of South African horseracing.

Mike de Kock’s Sparkling Water won the 2022 Hollywoodbets Durban July at Hollywoodbets Greyville, becoming her late multiple champion sire Silvano’s fifth winner of the race.

However, all eyes will be on Candice Bass-Charles Robinson’s Dickens, who is now listed at odds of 7/2 and aims to become the third 3-year-old to win the race in the past six renewals.

Charles Dickens has demonstrated exceptional speed and world-class ability over distances up to a mile, and is expected to compete in the Cape Derby (2000m) at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Saturday, February 25.

Drakenstein Racing Manager Kevin Sommerville opined that the Cape Derby would provide a solid indication of where their star was headed.

“Charles Dickens’ dam won up to two 200-meter races, and Trippi’s record is public knowledge. We will get more information following the Cape Derby,” he stated.

The second-favorite is Cousin Casey at 6/1, followed by Pomp And Power at 8/1 and Safe Passage at 10/1.

Sparkling Water is available for 16/1.
