Canada’s indigenous people experiencing homelessness will now have access to subsidized permanent housing

A new permanent housing facility in downtown Montreal will provide subsidized housing to 22 Indigenous people experiencing homelessness.

The Maison Akhwà:tsire is run by Projets Autochtones du Québec (PAQ) and opened its doors on Monday afternoon. The facility features 18 rooms, and unlike homeless shelters, residents can stay for as long as they wish. It also includes a 24/7 response team with social workers and nurses, and is intended for those who have experienced homelessness for a long time and face difficulties in finding housing.

Heather Johnston, executive director of PAQ, said that the facility would provide a dignified and kind place to call home for people who have spent years on the streets and live with intergenerational trauma. The house will also provide outdoor activities, cultural services, and alcohol consumption management programs.

The Maison Akhwà:tsire is an initiative of all levels of government. The federal government has provided $4.7 million under the Rapid Housing Initiative, while the Quebec government is funding $1.6 million through the Ministry of Health and Social Services and the First Nations and Inuit Relations Secretariat.

The City of Montreal will offer social accompaniment and technical support. Julia Hervieux, an Innu from Pessamit working for the firm Evoke, was hired to decorate the house, and each room design reflects a season.

The facility aims to offer a comfortable and safe space for homeless Indigenous people to reconnect with their language and culture. Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister Marc Miller, who is also an MP for the riding, said that the project represented a step forward in addressing the needs of the Indigenous homeless population.
