British woman survives life-threatening attack by a pink river dolphin

Claire Bye, a 28-year-old British woman, survived a life-threatening attack by a pink river dolphin while swimming in a river in Santa Rosa de Yacuma, Bolivia. She suffered a partially severed foot and required 32 stitches, as well as two life-threatening infections. After the attack, Claire was taken to a hospital, but her condition worsened after four days due to the infection, and she was advised to be flown to La Paz, Bolivia’s capital city, for further treatment. After undergoing skin flap surgery and spending a total of four weeks recovering in the hospital, Claire was finally able to return home to the UK.

Claire and her friend Louis were on a jungle trek to explore the Amazon Basin when they stopped at the river and spent time swimming and playing with the wild pink river dolphins. However, the dolphins turned aggressive, and after a few people got out of the water with scrapes on their legs, Claire decided not to go back into the water. She instead opted to play with a water bottle from the safety of the pontoon. However, after accidentally dropping the water bottle, she hopped into the shallow water to retrieve it, and moments later, a dolphin attacked her.

Due to the lack of medical facilities in the area, Claire was transferred to Rurrenabaque, Bolivia, a four-hour drive away. She required urgent medical treatment from Cemes Hospital in La Paz after her wound became infected. Claire has undergone two surgical cleans and skin flap surgery, and she is currently unable to work due to her injuries. She has seen a psychologist to help deal with the trauma and has daily flashbacks of the attack. Claire hopes to be able to wild swim again in the future but will never swim with dolphins again. Investigations are underway to determine why the dolphins attacked.
