Spanish detectives are baffled by the case of an Irish vacationer who inexplicably ended up dead in his neighbor’s pool in Costa del Sol.
At the crack of dawn on Saturday, the unidentified father-of-two was discovered floating face down in the pool of a lavish property in Benavista.
Although the circumstances surrounding his death have not yet been established by police, it is speculated that he may have slid and struck his head after being startled by a barking dog, forcing him to fall unconscious into the water.
Given that his family has a large vacation house just next door, it is still unexplained why the guy went on his neighbor’s property.
The British family that was renting the home at the time of his discovery has now relocated to a nearby hotel while authorities carry out their inquiries.
A police spokeswoman confirmed the death but would not comment on whether there was likely foul involvement.
The spokesperson said, “We cannot provide any details at this time other than to report that a guy was discovered in a pool on Saturday morning.”
Two men—the dead and a guy thought to be his brother—climbed his fence and leaped into the grounds at approximately 5am, according to the property’s Cuban owner, who spoke to Olive Press.
He said that his black labrador, Napoleon, growled at the intruders and may have frightened them, leading one of them to stumble and suffer an injury that ultimately resulted in his death.
“I know that my dog Napoleon barked a lot and may have pursued them, and that shortly after 5am I received a call informing me about the corpse,” the speaker said.
The guy said that police had received CCTV video that had been taken from his home and showed the two intruders on the property.
According to Olive Press reporters, the brother of the dead is said to have fled the scene and left behind bloody handprints, indicating that he was also hurt.
But the case’s specifics are still mostly a mystery.
“It is very awful.” What occurred was terrible, and what they were doing is very mysterious. All I know is that it was pitch black and impossible to see their faces, the landowner told Olive Press.
Although a toxicology report has not yet been made public, police are looking into whether the two may have been under the influence of narcotics at the time they chose to trespass.
The deceased had been having dinner and drinks at Bernie’s Bar with his family before the tragedy, according to the proprietor of the adjoining nightclub.
The property owner said that the family had been coming to the region “for decades” and that the night before the vacationer was found dead, they had “a very lovely evening and were just enjoying themselves.”
The odd occurrence is still being looked into.
