Kane Hull, who has 35 prior offenses on his record, including three violent assaults, attacked Mr. Kirkpatrick with accomplice Liam Porter, 33, who was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 26 years, according to evidence presented at Carlisle Crown Court.
The 24-year-old victim’s relatives and friends yelled “cowards” as the two men were brought away as they smiled to pals as they approached the dock for a sentence on Tuesday.
The court heard how Hull and Porter used a glass to strike Mr. Kirkpatrick, with whom they had a protracted dispute, but he managed to flee.
The two left for home, changed into disguises that included masks, and then came back a short while later. With a six-inch knife, Hull attacked Mr. Kirkpatrick, severing the major pulmonary artery and piercing his lung and liver.
He took off his disguise in the midst of the assault in the heart of Carlisle on September 18 of last year so that Mr. Kirkpatrick would recognize him.

“This event, which lasted up to 30 seconds and was akin to an execution, was committed by you as an assassin.”
Leading counsel described what you did with the adjectives “vicious,” “callous,” and “cowardly,” but I don’t believe it goes far enough.
The phrase “futile” should be included to highlight the pointlessness of what you did, which only served to make the Kirkpatrick family miserable and destroy your own life.
The court said Porter did nothing to halt the assault and instead “discouraged others from interfering” despite knowing Hull was carrying a knife and was a violent guy. In a statement presented to the court, Ryan’s mother, Andrea Johnson, said Hull’s threats caused her son to go out for the first time in a while.
After assaulting Mr. Kirkpatrick at a betting shop in 2017, Hull was previously sentenced to 21 months in prison for affray and weapon possession.
Hull was previously imprisoned when he was 15 years old for stabbing a guy seven times in an alleyway, severing his liver, and slashing open his stomach.
Police prevented Miss Johnson from getting near to her son as he lay dying, and she recounted the misery of missing out on being at his side as doctors battled to rescue him.
‘I begged to be at Ryan’s side as he needed me more than any other moment in his life,’ the mother of three claimed after being denied access to the cordon.
