Brian Daboll, the NFL’s newly crowned Coach of the Year, boarded a flight on Monday morning to attend the NFL Scouting Combine with his General Manager, Joe Schoen. Their purpose was to improve the talent level of the Giants team, and Schoen will also engage in face-to-face conversations with the representation of some of their players who are set to become unrestricted free agents. This week is the start of draft trade talks and contract parameters for impending free agents, amid plenty of rumours that tend to swirl at this time of year.

Daboll brought his coaching staff to the combine, preferring to be in the room with the players and conduct the interviews in person. He is not scheduled to do any interviews with the media at the combine, leaving it to Schoen, who will speak Tuesday afternoon, to do the talking as the Giants are in team-building mode.

This week’s main thrust is meeting with players eligible for the NFL draft. The Giants own the No. 25 overall pick and should be far more organized and prepared this time around, with the scouting department and the front office having one year of familiarity together. Teams can meet with as many as 45 players in interviews that cannot last longer than 20 minutes.

The Giants have plenty of needs to address, including wide receiver, inside linebacker, cornerback, depth on the interior of their offensive and defensive lines. They will meet with a wide variety of players at several different positions, aiming to gather as much information as possible to make knowledgeable decisions when the draft arrives in late April.
