Boyfriend accused of torturing and murdering his partner’s baby was a cannabis addict

A court has heard that the boyfriend of a mother, accused of torturing and murdering her baby, was smoking 15 cannabis joints a day and taking cocaine in a £120-a-day drug habit.

Jacob Lennon was just 15 months old when he was taken to hospital after suffering serious head injuries and eyes so swollen that he “looked like a panda.”

A post-mortem examination found injuries consistent with long-term abuse, and now the mother Louise Lennon, 32, and her boyfriend Jake Drummond, 33, face charges arising from his death.

Drummond denies murdering Jacob and a further charge of wounding the baby with intent, which includes an earlier incident of injury to the baby’s genitals with a sharp object.

Lennon also denies causing or allowing the death of a child and cruelty to a child. During the trial, the court heard that Drummond was spending £50 a day on cannabis and would smoke 10 or 15 spliffs in the weeks before Jacob’s death. He also said he would spend £70 a go on cocaine that would last him sometimes only one night.

The court also heard that Drummond had savings in cash stored in his home. At the time, he was also seeking help for depression, for which he was put on tablets, but they never helped him.

Drummond confirmed that he would take a hit of cocaine every hour and a half, adding that he was not addicted, but he wanted to be happy. Jurors heard that in March 2005, police were called to Drummond’s mother’s home after he threatened to kill her with a Stanley knife.

Drummond denied controlling his girlfriend, and it was alleged that he would blacklist and block male friends on Lennon’s phone, which he also denied. The trial continues.
