A major emergency response was triggered at Bournemouth Beach when two male swimmers were observed struggling in the same area where two children had drowned less than a week prior.

The incident, which occurred to the east of Bournemouth Pier, prompted a large-scale operation involving lifeguards, coastguards, an RNLI lifeboat, a coastguard helicopter, police officers, and ambulance paramedics.

Thankfully, the swimmers managed to make their way back to the beach unaided, leading to the conclusion of the operation.

The event unfolded just six days after the tragic deaths of Sunnah Khan, 12, and Joe Abbess, 17, who lost their lives in a suspected riptide near the pier.

A man in his 40s, who was present in the water at the time, was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter.

In addition, the Dorset Belle, a pleasure cruiser, was impounded amid suggestions that its prop wash may have contributed to hazardous sea conditions.

The incident occurred when Sunnah, Joe, and eight others encountered difficulty while swimming near the pier on May 31.

Despite the efforts of lifeguards and paramedics, both individuals were unable to be revived and were pronounced dead shortly after being airlifted to the hospital.

The coroner’s office attributed their deaths to a sudden riptide in the area.

Eyewitness Accounts and Emotional Impact:

Trevor Pinto, a beachgoer who witnessed the tragedy, described observing the formation of a riptide moments before Sunnah and Joe submerged.

Lifeguards on the beach had made an announcement about the riptide, prompting Mr. Pinto to look out to sea and notice the swirling current heading toward the pier.

Heartbroken friends and acquaintances of Joe and Sunnah expressed their grief and shared fond memories of the young victims.

Sunnah’s funeral, attended by over 200 people, took place at the Central Mosque in High Wycombe.

Ongoing Investigation and Precautionary Measures:

In the wake of the tragedy and subsequent incidents, concerns have arisen among parents regarding the safety of allowing their children to swim near Bournemouth Pier.

Tobias Ellwood, the local MP, criticized Dorset Police for not providing clarity on the incident and for failing to reassure the public about the safety of the sea.

As a precautionary measure, Bournemouth, Christchurch, and Poole Council announced the suspension of all boat operations from the pier pending the conclusion of the police investigation.

The council will consult with Dorset Police once the investigation is complete.
