The Nigerian House of Representatives has unanimously passed the second reading of a bill to establish Federal College of Animal Husbandry in Kaoje, Kebbi State in the North West of the Country.
Debating the bill before passage, Sponsor Bello Kaoje described Animal Husbandry as critical to the government’s quest for diversification of the economy, source of revenue, revenue creation as well as food security.
Mr.
Kaoje said when the institution comes on board it would serve as centre for research and innovation on Animal production to the North West as well as boost food production in the country.
“Aside from providing full-time courses in animal husbandry sciences instruction and training as well as in management and humanities, the college will also engage in research, innovation and the development of new ideas to help food sufficiency and economic development by providing manpower for the State and the nation in the Agricultural sector,” Mr Kaoje explained.
The establishment of the institution in the nomadic community bordering Niger and Benin Republics would bring a lot of development to the area while providing jobs for the teeming population.
Mr.
Kaoje also stated that “People from the neighbouring Niger and Benin Republic can patronise the services to be rendered by the institution, thereby generating revenue for Nigeria.
”
Kaoje is situated in Bagudo Local Government of Kebbi State.
Agriculture and Animal rearing are the main occupations of the population.
