Benjamin Mendy’s Return to Football After Legal Ordeal
After a two-year absence from professional football, Benjamin Mendy, the former Manchester City and France defender, has made a triumphant return to the sport.
Mendy, now 29 years old, marked his comeback by coming off the bench as a second-half substitute for Lorient in a Ligue 1 match against his former club, Monaco.
This return follows a tumultuous period during which Mendy faced serious legal allegations.
Acquittal After a Lengthy Legal Battle
Mendy’s return to the football pitch comes on the heels of his legal battle.
He had been accused of committing sex attacks on two women at his £4 million mansion.
However, after a lengthy trial, a jury at Chester Crown Court cleared him of all charges in July.
The relief was palpable as Mendy broke down in the dock and expressed his joy at the not guilty verdicts.
Resuming His Professional Career
Merely five days after the conclusion of his trial, Mendy signed a two-year contract with Lorient, a club in Ligue 1.
This marked his departure from Manchester City, where he had made 75 appearances since his £52 million move in 2017.
His acquittal paved the way for his return to professional football.
Lorient’s Recent Match and Mendy’s Contribution
During Lorient’s recent match against Monaco, the team secured an early lead in the second minute with a goal from Tosin Aiyegun.
However, Monaco quickly responded, with Aleksandr Golovin equalizing after 17 minutes.
The game remained competitive until the 69th minute when Folarin Balogun, a summer signing for Lorient, scored following his £38 million transfer.
Benjamin Mendy made his appearance in the 71st minute, entering the game as a substitute for Vincent Le Goff.
