Bafana exit CHAN after Angola thrashing

— Cape Town Bafana Bafana have been eliminated from the African Nations Championship (CHAN) and will not travel to Algeria for next year’s finals.

At the Dobsonville Stadium in Soweto, on Sunday, the visiting Angolan team improved upon their 2-0 victory in the first leg by defeating Bafana Bafana 4-1 for a final aggregate score of 6-1. The game was originally planned to take place at Orlando Stadium.

In the absence of national coach Hugo Broos, Bafana Bafana assistant coach Helman Mkhalele conducted one training session prior to the match.

Bafana Bafana appeared capable of overcoming the deficit early in the encounter, given their bright start.

Prince Nxumalo’s well-placed header off a Monnapule Saleng free kick in the sixth minute supplied the game’s first goal. Nxumalo outjumped the Angolan defense and scored after outjumping them.

In the following 10 minutes, Bafana Bafana had at least three scoring opportunities, including a penalty call that was denied.

Later in the half, Mosa Lebusa scored an own goal while attempting to clear a pass into the box for Bafana Bafana. He attempted to head the ball over the crossbar, but it sailed past goalie Reyaad Pieterse and into the goal.

Angola scored three consecutive goals in the second half to secure a spot in next year’s CHAN in Algeria. The goal scorers were Delvi Viera, Joaquim Paciencia, and Daniel Kilola.
