A firm that sells squeeze-on tomato sauce sachets for $1 apiece has infuriated Australians, with one popular television show even calling it a “crime.”

Australians have become accustomed to sauce being included with pies and sausage rolls, or sold for a little fee of approximately 20 cents.

Some online commenters said that stores selling $1 sauces should be ‘identified and shamed’ so that others can avoid them if they so want.

I was just in a Westfield bakery. The cashier inquired whether I would like sauce. One commented, “I thought it was free, said yes, and she charged me $1.”

Another individual stated, “I wouldn’t buy their food because this is blatant money-grubbing.”

“Tell them to get f****d; sauce is free with pies at servos; I won’t be purchasing your food,” wrote a third customer.

One commenter modified a scene from the classic Australian film The Castle, in which the father has a standard response to anything he deems too pricey.

“Hey Dad, I need two sauce sachets.” Whaddya reckon?’ The poster wrote the message.

‘Could not exceed ten cents. What does he desire for them?

‘Dollar each.’

“Tell them he is dreaming!”

A user stated, “At Coles, you can literally purchase a whole bottle of tomato sauce for $1.50,” but others defended the company owner by stating that times are bad.

‘No, what is un-Australian is the manner in which the government treats small businesses, wages, taxes, and renting costs, making it practically impossible to operate these without markups,’ said one.

Another warned anyone seeking to vent their fury against taking it out on the workers, who were merely performing their duties.

They answered, “Just leave, there’s no point in complaining to the 16-year-old girl working there for minimum wage.”

In September 2022, the Australian consumer price index, which tracks inflation, reached its highest level in more than three decades, at 7.3%.
