The Roebuck Bay Hotel, or “The Roey” as the locals call it, is Broome’s oldest pub and one of the most popular in the 14,000-person town on the north coast of Western Australia.

The venue usually has wet-t-shirt contests on Wednesday nights, but this week’s was changed to honor the beloved monarch. This caused a lot of people on social media to call it “disgusting.”

Her Majesty died at Balmoral Castle at the age of 96. Following her funeral on Monday, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has called for a one-time national public holiday on Thursday.

The Roey’s event on Wednesday said that ‘a few hundred people’ were expected to show up and that no disrespect was meant, but that some people might be offended.

“That’s not very nice,” wrote one person.

“Very bad taste,” said someone else.

The pub in Broome, a town of 14,000 people, is called “The Roey” by the people who live there.

After Mr. Albanese gets back from London, Australia’s national memorial service will be held on Thursday.

Melissa Doyle, a TV personality, will be in charge of the event. Singer Anthony Callea will perform, and all state premiers and chief ministers, state governors, federal members, senators, and the leader of the opposition will be there.

The day was made a public holiday, which made some business and healthcare lobbyists upset because they didn’t have enough time to move thousands of bookings.
