Australia Defeats South Korea

On March 9, 2023, Australia defeated South Korea in their World Baseball Classic opener in Japan, thanks in large part to Rob Glendinning and Robbie Perkins, who each blasted three-run homers.

The game was full of twists and turns, with both teams hitting several home runs

Logan Wade and Tim Kennelly put Australia up early, but South Korea responded in the fifth and sixth innings.

However, Glendinning’s homer in the top of the seventh gave Australia a 5-4 lead, and Perkins extended it to 8-4 an inning later.

South Korea rallied in the eighth but fell short, and Australia won their third-ever game at the tournament.

The game’s pitchers included Ko Young-Pyo, who went 4.1 innings for South Korea, and seven different relievers for the team after him.

Australia also emptied their bullpen, using nine pitchers. The win puts Australia in an early lead in Pool B, with two of the five teams set to advance to the quarter-finals.

They will next face China, followed by Japan and the Czech Republic.
