The Manhattan district attorney’s office is intensifying its criminal investigation into former President Trump’s alleged involvement in the payment of $130,000 in hush money to porn star Stormy Daniels, who claimed to have had an affair with him during the 2016 presidential campaign.
Kellyanne Conway, a former political advisor to President Trump, is the latest witness to meet with the DA’s office in connection with the ongoing investigation.
The payment was made by Trump’s longtime fixer, Michael Cohen, towards the end of the campaign, and Trump then reimbursed him.
Ms Conway is believed to have played a small but significant role in the payment, according to Cohen’s previous statements.
She has now met with prosecutors to establish her involvement in the alleged payment of hush money.
The DA’s office has already heard testimony from several witnesses, including two employees of the Trump Organization, Keith Davidson, Ms Daniels’ former lawyer, and David Pecker and Dylan Howard, who worked for The National Enquirer, the tabloid newspaper alleged to have helped arrange the payment of hush money to Ms Daniels.
A grand jury of 23 anonymous individuals has been convened to hear witness testimonies and determine whether charges should be brought.
The questioning of witnesses will ultimately inform district attorney Alvin L. Bragg’s decision on whether to seek to indict former President Trump and proceed with criminal charges.
Trump has repeatedly denied all wrongdoing and labelled the proceedings a partisan witch hunt against him.
His spokesperson has criticized the investigation, calling it “reprehensible and vindictive” and reexamined under “dubious legal theory.”
Nonetheless, the DA’s office is continuing to pursue the case, and the grand jury proceedings are ongoing.
