A woman has spoken of her horror after being beaten with a police baton by her cousin at a family gathering to remember two relatives who died during the pandemic.

Stacie Bastable, 33, was left with a broken neck and is still suffering from post traumatic stress disorder after the ‘appalling’ attack by Reece Cooper in April last year.

The then 18-year-old turned up at the family event in Wolverhampton with alcohol and armed with an extendable baton, which he used to hit his cousin and two other women, including Miss Bastable’s daughter.

He initially denied the offences, but then pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm, possession of an offensive weapon, and two offences of assault by beating, and was jailed for three years this week, the Express and Star reports.

After Reece Cooper’s “appalling” assault in April of last year, Stacie Bastable had a fractured neck and is currently dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder.

The incident left Miss Bastable with fractures, so she was given a unique halo neck brace to wear while she recovered from her wounds.

While a consequence of the attack, Kidderminster resident Miss Bastable, who suffered fractures, was given a unique halo neck brace to wear for nine weeks as she recovered from her wounds.

She also experienced PTSD, however, and was forced to resign from her position as a government servant. This was the first time she had been out of work since she was a teenager.

The mother of four spoke to MailOnline about the effects of the incident, which she described as totally unexpected and unprovoked.

He was just like a wild beast, she claimed. I immediately realized I had a fractured neck since I needed to use my hands to keep my head up.

“I used to go to the gym every day after work, but now I really struggle to go,” the individual said. “It’s absolutely affected my mentality.”

I just can’t bear the idea of returning to anything right now since I know I’m not psychologically prepared.

‘I freak out about simple small things, like going down the stairs, afraid I’ll tumble and break my neck again,’ the person said. I’m always in the alert state.

I worry that my kid may embrace me too tightly and damage me even then.

Reece Cooper first rejected the charges, but before a jury trial, he entered a plea of guilty. This week, the Express and Star writes that Reece Cooper was sentenced to three years in prison.

“I’m having trouble trusting other people now, too. If a member of my family can do that, how can I?” she said.

“I seldom talk to anybody who was at that party anymore,” she said, “it’s placed a great strain on the family.”

Cooper, now 20 years old, was sentenced by Judge Michael Chambers QC, who called it “an awful attack resulting in horrible injuries.”

You brought a deadly weapon to a family gathering, he continued. You attacked and assaulted a middle-aged lady at that party by repeatedly hitting her in the neck, fracturing her, and as a result, she had severe and permanent injuries.

The suspect received a three-year term to a juvenile offenders’ facility. Before being allowed to leave on a license, he must serve half.
