ASUU Suspends Strike Conditionally

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has conditionally ended the eight-month-long strike it has been conducting.

The union reached this conclusion after a protracted meeting of the union’s National Executive Committee (NEC) that began Thursday night and lasted until early Friday morning. The ASUU National Executive Council is comprised of both state chapter chairs and members of the ASUU National Executive.

While confirming the suspension to journalists, Committee members stated that the Committee will determine its next course of action, especially in light of the Court of Appeal’s ruling from the previous week.

The Appellate Court had earlier ruled that in order for the union to contest the National Industrial Court’s judgment ordering it to end its strike, it must first end the strike.

Additionally, it is anticipated that President Muhammadu Buhari would release an official circular later today.

There has not yet been an official statement published by the union.

The meeting followed last week’s intervention by House of Representatives Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila, who urged the union to halt the eight-month strike, and, more importantly, the Court of Appeal’s determination that the union must terminate the strike.

The Appellate Court ordered the union to terminate its strike and resume negotiations with the federal government.

As a result of the intervention of the Court of Appeals, the national executives of the union decided to meet to discuss their next steps.

The strike has been suspended as a result of the state branches’ decision to abide by the court’s ruling and allow continuing negotiation with the federal government.

The ASUU has been on strike since 14 February 2022.
