ASUU Strike Suspension Meeting Today

ASUU Strike Suspension Meeting Today

ASUU will have an emergency meeting to consider the suspension of the strike.

Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, will convene an emergency meeting of its National Executive Council (NEC) to address recent developments, especially the favorable response from the federal government to its demands.

In preparation for the meeting at its headquarters in Abuja, the union has requested that its zonal branches collect the opinions of its members through voting during the meetings slated for tomorrow in its various zones across the nation.

The outcome of the meeting would lead to the end of the strike by late Thursday or early Friday morning.

This occurred after an earlier Tuesday social media post announcing the union’s decision to end the nearly eight-month strike and encourage members to resume academic activities on October 17 went viral.

In response to a question, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, president of the ASUU, stated that the strike has not yet been suspended.

He did imply, though, that the union was working on a suspension of the strike, which would be based on the opinions of members expressed at zonal meetings.

The most recent action of the lecturers union followed the intervention of the Honorable Femi Gbajabiamila, Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Monday, the Speaker notified the ASUU president and other members that the strike will be terminated in the near future, claiming that his conversation with President Muhammadu Buhari on the union’s action had been fruitful.

Previously, Femi Falana, SAN, a human rights attorney and ASUU counsel, predicted that the union would soon terminate its nearly eight-month strike.
