Ashley Norman Hall is subjected to assault in prison

Former ABC radio host Ashley Norman Hall has been assaulted in prison and subjected to homophobic slurs after being charged with drug supply.

Hall, 52, allegedly used hotel rooms in Sydney to supply large quantities of cocaine, meth, MDMA, and GHB.

He was arrested during a police raid in December 2022 which uncovered $600,000 worth of drugs in two hotel rooms, leading to 23 charges related to supplying drugs and dealing with proceeds of crime.

The charges include allegations that Hall supplied a commercial quantity or greater of a particular drug.

Hall appeared in Sydney Downing Centre Local Court to seek bail after spending three months on remand, claiming he needed medical treatment for a hernia, heart condition, and sleep apnoea. His lawyer said that he was physically assaulted by another inmate due to his snoring.

The court heard that Hall had also been subjected to persistent homophobic vilification because of his sexuality and witnessed a horrific assault in jail. The court denied his bail request due to an unacceptable risk to the community and the seriousness of the charges.

Before his alleged drug activity, Hall was a prominent figure on ABC Radio, featuring as a presenter on AM, PM, and The World Today programs over his tenure and serving as the executive producer of AM.
