Harold Pinter, winner of the Nobel Prize, wrote a critically praised play that was a major hit in 1979 and earned an Olivier Award.
In 2019, the play saw a victorious revival on both the West End and Broadway, and in 2020 and 2021, it received several international theatrical prizes.
This is only the third occasion that the Pinter estate has provided exclusive rights to Cape Town for a short run in October.
At the time, Pinter’s use of reverse chronology was highly unique. The play incorporates various permutations of betrayal regarding a seven-year affair between a married couple, with Emma portrayed by Marlisa Doubell (Blueberry Toast, Thirst, The Vagina Monologues, Hello & Goodbye), Robert portrayed by Matt Newman (Gruesome Playground, Sweet Phoebe, Cock, The Treatment. ), and Robert’s “close friend” Jerry portrayed by Pierre Malherbe (Apple Face, Shakespeare in Love, The Kingmakers & The Eulogists).
Jerry and Emma have an affair for five years without Robert’s knowledge, until Emma exposes her infidelity to her husband, Robert, without notifying Jerry. The play is characterized by Pinter’s often frugal speech, the characters’ concealed feelings and motivations, their self-absorbed competitive one-upmanship, face-saving, dishonesty, and (self-)deceptions.
Professor Chris Weare, who won a Fleur du Cap Lifetime Achievement award in 2012 for his contributions to the South African performing arts scene, is directing this classic. Chris has previously worked for 2Sugars Productions, directing Sexual Perversion in Chicago in 2013 and Hello & Goodbye in 2014.
