Artscape to host Madosini concert

The grandmother of indigenous music and traditional instruments, the Honorable Dr. Madosini Latozi Mpahleni, will demonstrate her skill during the Ingoduko performance, which will be performed at the Artscape theatre from September 29 to October 1 at 19:30.

Ingoduko, created and conducted by Cape Town-born amazing musician and PhD candidate in Ethnomusicology Thandeka Mfinyongo, is a music concert celebrating our culture and giving voice to the IsiXhosa indigenous instruments – uhadi and umrhubhe – with the backing of the City of Cape Town.

Thandeka, a legend-in-the-making, will demonstrate an appreciation of African music for Africans, from where it originated, and provide a sense of home via singing.

In addition, the concert aims to immerse attendees in the essence of indigenous music that represents some of the earliest roots of jazz in Africa through indigenous, contemporary, and international artistic works intended to archive, inspire, and promote the holistic documentation of music from different cultures for the younger generation.

In addition, the performance aims to inspire individuals to return to their roots, embrace Africanism, and promote healing via indigenous music.

“Madosini,” as she is commonly called, is a living legend of South African culture and the 2013 recipient of the Act Lifetime Achievement Award. She was recently honored and praised by the South African Minister of Sport, Arts, and Culture, Mr. Nathi Mthethwa, for her commitment to the preservation of isiXhosa indigenous instruments as the bearer of our culture and the source of indigenous music knowledge.

This event is dedicated not just to honoring her contribution to “Thandeka Mfinyongo” as an uhadi and umrhubhe musician, but also to the South African music business, where she is considered a national treasure.

Over the years, Madosini has collaborated and written songs with British rock singer Patrick Duff, and in 2003, the two went on to play a number of successful shows around the world together. She has worked with South African musicians Thandiswa Mazwai, Ringo, Derek Gripper, and the renowned Brazilian musician Gilberto Gil.

Her most recent collaboration with artists Hilton Schilder, Jonny Blundell, Lulu Plaitjies, and Pedro Espi-Sanchis culminated in the release of an African/Jazz fusion CD titled AmaThongo and a number of gigs throughout Africa.
