Arthur Hawrylewicz, a 42-year-old man from Cardiff, pleaded guilty to attempted murder at Inner London Crown Court on Monday. The charge was in relation to an incident at King’s Cross Underground station where he drunkenly tried to pull a woman in front of an oncoming train as she travelled to Notting Hill Carnival.
The victim, a 22-year-old woman, was waiting for a Hammersmith and City line train with her friends when Hawrylewicz spoke to her. She asked him to leave her alone, but he grabbed her from behind, lifted her up, and attempted to throw himself and his victim in front of the train.
Her friends managed to pull her free, while Hawrylewicz was hit on the head by the oncoming train and knocked unconscious. When questioned in the hospital the next day, he said he had gone to the station with the intention of harming himself and could not remember any interaction with the victim. Before the incident, he had drunk three beers and a third of a bottle of vodka.
Detective Sergeant Mike Blakeburn from British Transport Police (BTP) described the attack as “completely unprovoked and incredibly disturbing.” He praised the victim’s friends for their brave actions, stating that without them, a murder investigation could have been necessary.
Blackburn added that Hawrylewicz had never explained his actions and claimed no recollection of the incident. However, the victim will have to live with the traumatic memory for the rest of her life.
Hawrylewicz will be sentenced on April 24, and is expected to receive a significant custodial sentence. Blakeburn emphasized that such incidents are rare on the railway network, and BTP officers were able to arrest Hawrylewicz quickly.
