Around 3 million UK trade marks will be added to WIPO’s Global Brands Database

This comes after a collaboration pact was signed today at the General Assemblies in Geneva by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the UK Intellectual Property Office (IPO).

The WIPO provides the Global Brands Database as a free internet tool.

More than 50 million records from 71 national and international collections are accessible in one location.

The device is made to be effective and simple to use. When registering a trade mark, businesses can use it anywhere in the world to see if the mark—or one that is similar—is already in use.

Before submitting a trade mark application, those who are interested in registering a mark can search the Global Brands Database or simply browse already-registered marks in markets that they may be interested in.

The UK will initially add about 3 million records, beginning with already registered trade marks.

Since these trade marks have been added to the global database, anyone conducting a database search anywhere in the world will be able to find UK registered trade marks.

They are therefore less likely to be unintentionally violated.

Tim Moss, the CEO of the IPO, said:

We are excited to collaborate with WIPO to support outstanding British brands and to the advantage of IP users all over the world.

Businesses will be able to confidently expand their brands thanks to the WIPO database’s addition of more than 3 million UK registered trade marks.

It will reassure UK trade mark owners that their mark is less likely to be violated by offering additional protection.

Our collaboration with WIPO in areas of mutual interest ensures the IP framework’s continued viability. Joining the database is a sensible step that will help maintain the UK as one of the most highly regarded IP environments in the world.

Director General of the WIPO Daren Tang stated:

We are pleased that the UK trademark collection has been added to the WIPO Global Brand Database.

This is a huge development for users everywhere and significantly raises the database’s worth, particularly for businesses looking to submit fresh trademark applications across several nations.

Additionally, the new agreement opens the door for more technological cooperation between our offices, including the application of machine learning to increase the effectiveness of IP-related processes.
