Arctic blast to bring icy and cold weather conditions to UK

This week, an Arctic blast is expected to bring icy and cold weather conditions to the UK, with forecasted ice, snow, sleet, hail, and low temperatures.

The Met Office’s radar has shown an area of rain moving in from the south and west, turning increasingly to sleet and snow as it moves north and east.

On Wednesday, more sleet and snow are expected across southern England and south Wales, while scattered snow and hail showers will impact Scotland’s northern coasts as the Arctic blast intensifies.

The Met Office has issued several national severe warnings for snow and ice, with further updates and warnings considered “very likely.”

Matthew Lehnert, the Met Office’s chief meteorologist, has warned that the weather could cut off rural communities in the north and impact travel over the next few days across southern England and south Wales.

The focus for snow moves to southern England and South Wales on Thursday, and some areas may wake up to a few centimetres of snow, with the south coast and far south-west likely to see a mix of rain and sleet.

Furthermore, further snow and hail showers are expected along northern coasts, especially in northern Scotland.

In the afternoon, a further sleet and snow spell will likely develop across southern England and South Wales, which could cause travel disruption into the evening.

Lying snow and ice on untreated surfaces may impact Thursday morning travel.

The UK Health and Security Agency has issued a Level 3 Cold Weather Alert.

Met Office deputy chief meteorologist Helen Caughey said that the snow risk will spread to central and northern areas of the UK through Thursday and Friday.
