The African National Congress (ANC) has expressed strong condemnation over the alleged sexual abuse and rape committed by two of its councillors in Matlosana, North West and eMalahleni, Mpumalanga.

The ANC in the North West suspended a 40-year-old councillor over sexual misconduct and circulating videos that showed him allegedly sexually assaulting two teenage boys.

In Mpumalanga, a 39-year-old ward councillor was arrested for allegedly attempting to rape a 12-year-old girl, and he also faces charges of housebreaking and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The ANC has commended its two provinces of Mpumalanga and North West for taking decisive action against these councillors by invoking rule 25.17 of the ANC Constitution.

The party has also pledged to closely follow both cases to ensure that there are consequences for any proven wrongdoing.

The ANC expects its members and public representatives to demonstrate the highest level of ethical conduct and morality, and there is no room in the party for abusers who masquerade as cadres.

The ANC has urged the criminal justice system to ensure that those found guilty of these barbaric crimes are given the harshest possible punishment.

The courts have a responsibility to send a clear message to all abusers that their actions will not be tolerated.

Those who commit atrocities and murders against women and children must be held accountable for their actions and face the full force of the law.

The ANC’s swift response to these incidents is commendable, as it shows that the party takes issues of sexual abuse and rape seriously and is committed to ensuring that its members uphold the highest standards of ethical conduct.

The ANC’s stance sends a clear message that such behaviour will not be tolerated and that perpetrators will face the consequences of their actions.

It is essential that all individuals and institutions in South Africa work together to end the scourge of gender-based violence and ensure that justice is served for victims of sexual abuse and rape.
