An explosion occurs on a busy walkway in Istanbul that is frequented by pedestrians

Istanbul — Sunday’s explosion on Istanbul’s popular pedestrian Istiklal Avenue resulted in fatalities and injuries, according to a top official.

Ali Yerlikaya, the governor of Istanbul, tweeted that the explosion occurred at approximately 4:20 p.m. (1320 GMT) and that there were fatalities and injuries, although he did not specify the number. The explosion’s origin was unclear.

A video shared online shows passersby fleeing as flames and a loud explosion erupted.

Other footage showed police, ambulances, and fire vehicles at the area. According to social media users, stores were closed and the Boulevard was deserted.
CNN Turk reported that eleven persons were hurt. The avenue is a bustling, popular tourist and local street lined with shops and eateries.
Between 2015 and 2017, the Islamic State and illegal Kurdish factions carried out a series of deadly bombs against Turkey.
