Ambassador Kristín A. Árnadóttir from Iceland tasks experts to review the human rights situation in Russia

The Russian Federation is a member of the OSCE and has pledged to defend fundamental liberties and human rights.

On behalf of the aforementioned delegations, I’m making the following statement:

In addition to my own nation, Iceland, there are also the following nations: Albania, Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Republic of Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Montenegro, Netherlands, North Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine, and the United States.

According to the OSCE, the Russian Federation is heading towards a situation in which its inhabitants are completely censored and cut off from any kind of independent information.

There are still more than 430 political prisoners being held by the Russian Federation.

There are numerous reports of torture and other forms of mistreatment in detention facilities all around Russia.

Any violation of fundamental liberties and human rights is in violation of OSCE obligations.

The experts’ mission will include, among other things, a review of Russia’s compliance with its OSCE Human Dimension commitments, both in theory and in practise.

They will also evaluate how these trends will affect Russian civil society, the rule of law, and the viability of democratic institutions and procedures there.

We welcome the experts to provide recommendations and counsel to the Russian Federation, the OSCE, and the international community in addition to establishing the facts.
