A recent essay published by Insider on March 9 by an NYU student named Stacia Datskovska, who studied in Florence, has caused a stir online.
Datskovska expressed her dislike for every aspect of her semester abroad, including her seven roommates, the locals, and her online internship.
She also felt that her time abroad did not advance her career and that her peers back in New York were making more progress.
Amanda Knox, a former exchange student in Italy, also commented on the essay, jokingly asking why Datskovska did not enjoy studying abroad.
Datskovska had high hopes for her semester in Florence but was unable to enjoy the city due to her busy schedule and online internship.
She also felt that her peers were too focused on superficial experiences like weekend trips to places like Amsterdam and Ibiza, which she saw as a “vain form of escapism.”
Instead, Datskovska traveled alone to Nice, Switzerland, London, Malta, and Dubai.
However, the people of Florence caused her particular angst, with some locals being “hostile, inconsiderate, and preposterous” towards her.
Datskovska’s essay elicited mixed reactions, with some empathizing with her struggles, while others accused her of being entitled.
Knox, who was previously imprisoned in Italy after being accused of killing her roommate, also had a difficult time studying abroad.
Despite this, she still enjoyed her experience and joked about Datskovska’s negative perception of studying abroad.
Knox and her Italian boyfriend were accused of the 2007 killing of her roommate, but they were eventually acquitted due to a lack of evidence.
The case caused international headlines, and Knox spent four years in an Italian prison before being released.
Meanwhile, Rudy Guede, whose DNA was found on the victim’s body, was found guilty of the crime and sentenced to 30 years in prison, of which he served 13 years.
