Anthony Albanese has made an odd request to observers when his little white dog relieved himself in the park in front of the world’s media.

The embarrassed Prime Minister was spotted on the grounds of The Lodge in Canberra playing fetch with Toto, who decided that with camera crews watching on, it was the ideal time to take a toilet break.

As Mr Albanese went to pick up Toto’s mess, his team of minders directed photographers not to capture the humbling moment.

Then off-camera, the PM set an excellent example for dog-owners everywhere by bending down to scoop the poop in a plastic bag.

Mr Albanese invited diplomats from more than 20 Commonwealth nations to mourn the Queen’s passing at The Lodge.

Toto, a cavoodle, was with Mr Albanese as he greeted the high commissioners from Britain, Canada, New Zealand and African and Pacific Island nations.

The dog sat in on several informal meetings with the high commissioners and leaders in recent days too.

‘They’re coming to pay their respects and to commemorate the contribution of Queen Elizabeth to the Commonwealth,’ Mr Albanese said of a reception held at The Lodge.

Mr Albanese and Governor-General David Hurley will fly to London this weekend to attend a state funeral for the Queen at Westminster Abbey.

That begins at 8 pm on Monday Sydney and Melbourne time.

He will return in time for Australia’s newest public holiday, which is an official day of mourning for the Queen.
