After juvenile fatalities, cop wants ‘confronting’ driving lessons

Following the “horrific and gruesome” murders of adolescent girls aged 14 and 15, a senior police official said that Australians need to have a “confronting talk” about driving safety.

The two girls perished on Saturday night on the Monaro Highway in the ACT when the car they were “joyriding” in veered off the road, slammed through a row of fences, and struck a tree.

The 16-year-old youngster who is allegedly driving was placed under arrest on Monday morning.

Flowers and a box of Ferrero Rocher chocolates placed at the accident site in memory of the girls who perished were among the heartwarming touches.

The 16-year-old was remanded in jail after appearing before the ACT Children’s Court on Monday, according to Detective Acting Inspector Travis Mills, the officer in charge of road police, who claimed that he did not request bail at that time.

A number of offenses, including two charges of culpable driving causing death, are brought against the youngster.

Later this month, he will return to court.

If the youngster requested bail, the police were prepared to object.

On Sunday morning, it is claimed that a Toyota vehicle being driven by a teenager collided with a tree along the Monaro Highway near Hume.

At the site, the two adolescent females were discovered dead.

The crime scene was characterized as “horrific and gory” by Acting Insp. Mills.

Please discuss with your family what is expected of you as a road user on our roads, he said.

It can be a difficult talk, but you might end up going home as a result.

It was a horrible loss of life that wasn’t necessary.

It is believed that the driver and a different passenger that the girls knew left the scene of the collision, leaving the deceased victims behind.

Later, police located the two teenagers who were said to have fled.

They got medical treatment, according to a police spokeswoman, and were helping major collision investigators with their enquiries.

The fatalities raise the ACT road toll for this year to 14 already.

Anyone with information on the collision or dashcam video is invited to get in touch with Crime Stoppers.
